Where Harmony Night family members share their own verse

Those Harmony Nights

Today’s one of those days

When we’re together once more

It’s just like old times again

We miss Harmony Nights for sure

All together on Sunday night

When everyone was there

Just one big family

The family from everywhere

Those days we will remember

There are etched in our hearts

People from far and wide

All playing their parts

Not forgetting the listeners

Who helped make the show

We won’t forget Harmony Nights

To lose it was a blow

But we’ve all kept together

As time has passed

It may be just a memory

But boy was it a blast!

The girl on the end of the telephone

I actually got to meet her

Lisa is this girls name

And of course Bill and Rita

All remembered with affection

Are Sundays aren’t complete

But on days like this

A few of us can meet

Another Day

Another day on the roundabout

As the dawn breaks once more

On the merry go round of life

I wonder what is in store

Today will be a good day

That’s what Old Tom said

It’s up to us to make it that

As we face the day ahead

Let’s all be optimistic

As we set out on our day

Make sure we cope with things

That we face along the way

The trials and tribulations

Will be there for us to face

But we can master them

If we’re in the right place

A day to look forward to

It will be another test

Give it everything you’ve got

You can only do YOUR BEST

Santa Claus is on his way

Santa Claus is on his way

It’s Christmas time once more

Bringing lots of presents

And happiness for sure

A time to get together

For friends and family

To wish each other happiness

Wherever you may be

To share in Christmas greetings

And wish each other well

These times will be remembered

For everyone to tell

The robin sits on the holly

With his red breast shining bright

Bringing us this Christmas

And everything seems right

So a merry Yuletide everyone

I hope you have a ball

And as we say every year

A happy Christmas one and all

Time for celebration

Time for celebration

Christmas time is here

Time to spend together

With our near and dear

Sharing all our memories

Of the years gone past

Times that we remember

Memories that will last

As the Robin sits on the bough

The Christmas message to share

He shares it with everyone

Everyone EVERYWHERE

Those days we find happiness

That we share on Christmas Day

Memories will come flooding back

And forever they will stay

Share Yuletide with your family

And maybe with your friends

Make it the best Christmas ever

And hope it never ends

'Tis I, Old Jim

There's a bloke in our village

But he doesn't do a lot

If you ask him any questions

All he ever says is "Wot?"

Most of the village like this bloke

That's why he's so well known

You hardly ever see him though

'Cos he lives somewhere alone

He could be outside the pub

Or on the village green

He usually comes out after dark

He's got a set routine

He does the same every day

And people think he's dim

They don't really know him though

They just know his name is Jim

Old Jim he may know nothing

He doesn't trouble anyone

Whatever people think of him

He must be someone's favourite son

He's been around for ages

And I know he likes it here

He's not as silly as you think

He likes to read Shakespeare.

Old Jim's the village idiot

And as he's sat under this tree

I know all about this chap

Because the village idiot is ME

Our resident poet Ian has been recovering from a recent Covid diagnosis. While recuperating, he wrote this…

Lonely as a a cloud

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That’s what clouds like to do

Wherever I was wandering

I didn’t have a clue

I just took off on me walk

Feeling a little bit down

I just kept on wandering

Wearing this great big frown

Suddenly I was miles away

On my lonely walk

This bloke said hello to me

I think he wanted to talk

On this path of loneliness

I think he’d lost his way

We sat on this bench talking

He had quite a lot to say

I thought I was lonely

But his story was so sad

It shook me to my roots

And my life didn’t seem so bad

As we went on our way

With our stories in our head

Instead of the frown I was wearing

I was now wearing a smile instead.

Ian wasn't able to attend the reunion in Abingdon due to poor health, but he sent a poem that was read out by Lisa at the event and everyone raised their glasses to Bill at the end. Cheers and the very best of health to you Ian.

A very special person

I felt the need to write this down

About a very special person

For all the joy he’s brought to us

This is just my version.

He has been the voice of reason

Every Sunday night

And with Rita by his side

He has made our Sunday evenings bright.

This man’s an institution

He’s been on the air for years

And when they took his programme off

We all shed a few tears.

Good luck Bill in all you do

You have been a shining star

We think of you on Sunday nights

No matter where we are.

You gave Sunday nights a meaning

As we all kept in touch

So raise your glasses with me

As we say thank you very much.

Another glass of...

A thunderstorm came and went

To bring forth another day

And as I look out of my window

There’s another one on the way.

As the sun comes out

Clouds gather overhead

Suddenly the sun is gone

And we’ve got the rain instead.

As I look skyward

A pigeon hurries by

It’s raining and the sun’s out

And there’s a rainbow in the sky.

It all looks very pretty

As the sky turns blue

But it can’t make its mind up

What it’s going to do.

The rain’s stopped again

And everything seems fine

Guess what I feel like

Another glass of wine!

First Day of Spring

Officially they tell me now

It’s the first day of Spring

I thought it would never get here

So I wonder what will it bring.

The rain is still a-falling

Dark clouds are in the sky

Occasionally the sun comes out

To wave the rain goodbye.

The days will soon get warmer

And there won’t be so much rain

Then I can go out more

And lead a normal life again.

During Autumn/Wintertime

I tend to vegetate

It’s my time for doing nothing

A time to speculate.

All the things I’ve planned

I’ll probably never do

But as Spring turns to summer

I’ll most probably muddle through

I like to keep occupied

Now and then I’ll write a rhyme

And when I’ve finished this one

I’ll have another glass of wine

Regular listeners to the Harmony Night show will recall our regular Poetry Corner section of the show,  where Bill would read out a poem by Harmony Night family member Ian of Harwell.  Ian's poems were always so popular with listeners, so we are delighted to have a new poem written by Ian for the website.  Thanks Ian!

If I could....

If I could have a superpower

I wonder what would it be

I have thoughts in my head

Maybe two or three

If I could be invisible

I could go anywhere

If I started to move things

Everyone would stare

Maybe if I could fly

That would be really good

I would fly every day

Around my neighbourhood

They would all stare in wonder

Saying ‘who can that fool be’

I would be going so fast

They wouldn’t know it was me

But the one power I wish I had

Is the power to be able to heal

I could do so many good things

That would be the real deal

That really would be a superpower

A power that I would use

If I ever had the choice

That’s the one I would choose

A superpower is just a dream

That we have from time to time

I had that dream last night

That why I wrote this rhyme
